Axiron (underarm testosterone gel), manufactured by Eli Lilly & Co., has been associated with an increase risk of heart attack, stroke, blood clots, pulmonary embolism, and death. Schmidt & Clark, LLP is evaluating lawsuits for people who were injured by Axiron side effects because we are concerned that Eli Lilly & Co. is aggressively promoting Axiron to treat “Low T” while downplaying its life-threatening risks.

Axiron and Blood Clots
One of the most serious side effects of Axiron is a blood clot. On its own, a blood clot can cause severe venous damage wherever it forms. If a blood clot breaks loose in the bloodstream (called an “embolism”), it can obstruct the supply of oxygen-rich blood to the heart, brain, lungs, or other vital organ. Without oxygen, tissues rapidly begin to die.
Axiron increases the risk of blood clots in several ways:
- Elevating blood pressure
- Increasing the amount of red blood cells
- Making the blood thicker
- Decreasing amounts of HDL (“good”) cholesterol
- Increasing circulating estrogens
In younger men, athletes, and bodybuilders, some of these side effects are sought-after because they can improve sports performance. This is why testosterone is a Schedule III controlled substance. However, for older men, these physiological changes may significantly increase the risk of deadly cardiovascular events.
Axiron and Heart Attack
In recent years, several studies linking Axiron and heart attacks have been published, prompting an investigation and Safety Warning from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
One of the first studies, published in 2010 by the New England Journal of Medicine, was halted in 2009 after researchers in Boston found that older men in poor health had five-times as many heart attacks as men on a placebo. More recently, PLoS One published a study in January 2014 in which men over 65 were twice as likely to have a heart attack. Younger men with heart disease were three-times as likely to heave a heart attack.
Axiron Stroke Risk 30% Higher in First 90 Days
During the first 90 days of treatment, the risk of stroke from Axiron increases by 30%, according to a study published in Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA). Stroke is one of the most severe Axiron side effects — for every minute during a stroke, 2 million brain cells die. The resulting brain damage may cause permanent paralysis, speech problems, memory loss, and other disabilities.
Axiron and Pulmonary Embolism
Approximately 5% of men have a genetic mutation that significantly increases their risk of blood clots and pulmonary embolism from testosterone, according to a study published in Translational Research by Dr. Charles Glueck. Pulmonary embolisms occur when blood clots are trapped in the lungs, and 30% of cases are fatal without rapid treatment.
